Wes Anderson’s latest film, Moonrise Kingdom, is now out in theaters! New York and Los Angeles saw their debuts last week, and nationwide roll out is just around the corner.

San Francisco will see the debut of the film on Thursday, May 31st at the Metreon, help us spread the word and enter our official contest for a Moonrise Kingdom gift pack!

Day 5 of the Philadelphia Film Festival

Today I only managed to catch one film. This was due to having to catch up on some work at home and it was probably the strangest film I have yet to see at the festival so far.

The film is called UNDERWATER LOVE and it a Japanese Pink Musical. If you’re not up on your exploitation genres pink is the equivalent to American softcore the only difference is pink films are still shot on film and shown in theaters which are dedicated to this strange little genre. There is also other rules which the genre usually adheres to but I won’t get into that too much here.

This film happened to be about a young boy who is reincarnated as a Kappa (a mythical Japanese creature that is part turtle and part human that loves to eat cucumbers and dump water on his head) who has come to see his childhood love who is now 30 and about to get married. There is a reason for his visit but I rather not spoil that to tell you the truth.

The film is definitely low budget and has a definite charm to its lack of funds. The musical numbers are strange because there is not much in the way of choreography or even synching the singing on screen with the songs.

The film’s look is what saves it from a fate as a simple piece of exploitation. The film has a very dreamy fairy tale like look to it that definitely helped make some of the strange things on screen seem actually some what believable and more watchable.

While this film is not for everyone I had a lot of fun watching this strange little film. Would I watch it again? Probably not but it was definitely fun once. So if you like strange Japanese fareI think you owe it to yourself to check it out at least once.

The screening of UNDER WATER LOVE I saw at the Philadelphia film fest had quite a few issues. First being the film started without picture but with sound. Then the picture appeared, but with no subtitles for the Japanese audio. Then the film was restarted and was not in the proper aspect ratio much like the screening of BATTLE ROYALE with the image overflowing on the sides of the screen.

Someone complained and then the side curtains were pulled so the screen fit.

Then since the subtitles were getting cutting off at the bottom they spent about 15 minutes shrinking the picture and enlarging it, which I found super distracting. For the first 30 minutes they were fiddling with the screening.

Day 4 of the Philadelphia Film Festival

Day 4 was sadly only a double feature. I started the night with the Mexican film MISS BALA. Now I had seen bits on MISS BALA online, but it wasn’t on my must see list to be honest. It definitely turned out to be a pleasant surprise about 30 minutes in when I was hooked on its gritty portrayal of a girl trying to be a beauty queen in the drug cartel infested state of Baja California.

The film is an action film like you would expect in our own cinema complexes, polished and well directed. It’s just rougher around the edges, not shying away from darker subject matter action films here tend to glance over. We watch as this girl’s dreams are both realized and destroyed by a chance encounter with the head of one of the most notorious gangs in her area.

The film is unrelenting and unflinching in the portrayal of the situation this poor girl is stuck in. The acting was superb and the camera work in this film was beautiful to say the least. If you get a chance you should definitely check this one out. The film was also recently designated as Mexico’s entry in the 84th Academy Awards and for good reason.

I had actually planned to see THE YELLOW SEA but instead opted to check out Johnnie To’s new film LIFE WITHOUT PRINCIPLE. The basis of this decision was I just didn’t want to go all the way across the city to the Rave and I could get free popcorn refills at the Ritz East.

I am glad I did, I honestly have to say I started to get giddy when I saw the all too familiar Media Asia logo on the big screen. The film follows three characters: a loan shark, a low level triad and a bank teller whose paths all intersect while dealing with Hong Kong’s almost loan shark like banking system.

While you may think this isn’t a very interesting premise you have no idea how often this is a theme in Chinese cinema. Money is a big deal over there and if you have spent anytime in China or Hong Kong you understand their money obsessed society, I mean this is a country where loan sharking is its own film subgenre.

The film is slow to build but you can’t take your eyes off it as the stories start to interleave and intersect with its non-linear narrative. It was also great to see Ching Wan Lau in a non-comedy role and really carrying his own in a more dramatic atmosphere.

I cant tell you how much I enjoyed this film and if you’re a fan of Chinese cinema I highly suggest you checking it out!

Picked this up today. Can’t wait to watch it!
